Montana HOSA is one of seven Montana Career and Technical Organizations (CTSOs) partially funded through House Bill 2 and HB 382 which provides a unique program of leadership development, motivation, and recognition exclusively for middle, secondary, and collegiate students who have an interest in pursuing careers in the health professions. Many of these students are also enrolled in co-curricular health science education or biomedical science programs in their schools.
Rural sociologists rank Montana as having the second highest demand for leaders in the United States. An estimated 1 in 8 will need to step forward to lead in local governments, non-profits, schools, and in industry. Research has clearly shown high school and college leadership experiences predict future leadership as adults in both business and civic and social activities. In fact, leadership experiences in organizations such as HOSA relate more closely to adult success than does academic achievement alone.
Additionally, HOSA is the only student organization that is 100% healthcare. HOSA allows students to make informed career decisions and realistic career goals flexible to the ever changing nature of the medical industry. 80% of rural America is considered medically underserved. In Montana, 52 of the 56 counties are classified as medically-underserved and health professional shortage areas by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. As Montana state ages, health care needs will continue to increase at dire rates. Montana HOSA works with education and industry partners to develop a highly skilled workforce to meet these growing needs.
